Balu und Du

“Balu und Du” (in English: “Baloo and you”) is a mentoring program for underprivileged children aged between 6 and 10 years. Young adults (17 – 30 years) can become mentors (Baloos) for these children (Mowglis) and support their integration into society, their personal development and help them tackle the challenges of their everyday lives. A child can become a Mowgli if teachers suggest them for this program (only with parents’ approval).

One Baloo takes care of one Mowgli for at least one year. Each week they meet for 1-3 hours and do a leisure activity together (e.g. hiking, biking, going to a park or to the cinema, making music together or just sitting and talking). Quite often Baloos and Mowglis stay in contact even after their participation in the program and become lifelong friends.

BCD Germany

The staff of several BCD offices in Germany support the “Balu und du” mentoring program by participating as Baloo and be ambassadors for the initiative in ‘their’ offices. They also can donate money which is used for:

  • Pocket money for Baloo and Mowgli tandems: Each tandem gets 10 euro per month for their activities (e.g. paying entrance fee for museums or cinema, buying handicraft materials).
  • Educational professionals (guidance for Baloos).
